Abstract
PURPOSE: Prove feasibility of the HeartQuestTM magnetically levitated VAD intended for 10-year life in end-stage CHF patients. METHODS: Magnetic levitation and flow path were refined. Components such as cannulae and percutaneous cable have been integrated with the optimized pump. In vivo animal testing with this system is ongoing. SUMMARY OF RESULTS: Key subsystems include: Pump with simple, single active axis, magnetic levitation. Cannulation - Accommodates varied anatomy Percutaneous cable – Small, flexible, with implantable connector Controller – Wearable with fixed, automatic, and failsafe speeds Battery packs – Two provide 8–10 hours of operation Monitor - Remote communication capability to clinic. System performance highlights: Magnetic stiffness (9g capacity allows activity, e.g.- basketball) Virtual Zero Power (VZP) levitation minimizes power consumption Sensorless flow estimator accurate to <10% Optimized clinical pump design has been demonstrated in studies including 30, 32, 61 (ongoing), and 40 (ongoing) day animals with insignificant hemolysis (<10 mg/dl) & minimal pump related complications Excellent fluid path results at extended low (0.8 to 1.5 L/m) flow The HeartQuestTM VAD is a simple, reliable system which provides excellent performance over a wide range of hemodynamic conditions. System architecture is complete and integration testing continues with animal studies.
