Abstract

Navel orangeworm, Amyelois transitella (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), is a major pest of almonds and walnuts. Analysis of measurements of width of head capsules of 847 larvae indicates that growth rate between instars fits Dyar's rule. However, width of larval head capsules cannot be used directly to determine developmental stage of individuals because range of measurements of two consecutive developmental stages overlap. A statistical method for sorting larvae whose capsule measurements fall in the overlapping areas is presented. The method is based on the probability that a larva in any of these categories may belong to one or the other adjacent stage.
