Abstract
The history of food supply in the Lithuanian ghettos allows us a glimpse at the every-day realities of a forced community. This chapter discusses the ghettos in Vilnius and Kaunas as examples to demonstrate how it was possible to organise a basic food supply—if only meagre—for the people living in the ghetto. Aside from depicting the food supply system and the institutions involved within and outside the ghetto, this chapter focusses on the everyday realities of the people who were, more than by anything else, characterised by the continuous struggle to access as much food as possible for themselves and their families.
