Abstract

Prevention in general practice should be differentiated into prevention in general practice and specific general practice prevention. The first is prevention as done or possibly done in other institutions of health care. The second means the use of the specific general practice approach with individualised care, also used in prevention. This approach is possible because doctors mostly know their patients well and have a stabile doctor-patient-relationship. This approach uses patient’s strengths and weaknesses/risks as well the chance for prevention in a certain situation. “Quartary prevention” is part of it and means bewaring the patient from medicalization. Aside these fields, general practice can be part of preventive community medicine and has a function in giving social stability and, with it, is preventive.
