Abstract

Carrying on from the developments BJR saw in 2012 and 2013, including open access, a licence to publish and a move to continuous publication, 2014 will see the launch of a new-look BJR website for enhanced and more user-friendly content delivery. Our new website allows our readers to easily navigate content, for example by issue, subject area or keywords, making it easier than ever before to find the articles you want to read from across the broad range of topics published in BJR. Thanks to our move to continuous publication in 2013 and our faster peer review, BJR articles are available quicker than ever before, so that our readers have the latest radiological research at their fingertips. BJR's receipt to first decision time is a mean of 41 days, and once an accepted BJR article is in its final form, it is immediately published online and can be cited from then. At present, a BJR paper that has been accepted for publication appears in its final version within only 3 weeks! If this fast turnaround sounds good to you, submit your next article to BJR (http://www.editorialmanager.com/bjr). In addition to delivering the latest research in radiology, radiation oncology and the underpinning sciences as soon as possible, we have been digitizing the prestigious BJR archive into an online resource. It will be accessible free of charge to all BIR members and available to institutional subscribers through a subscription. The complete archive of BJR and its predecessors has been digitized back to 1896 and will be launched in January 2014. Tracing back to the oldest scientific journal in the field of radiology and related sciences, BJR has published a number of pioneering articles, including the first description of CT, “Computerized transverse axial tomography”, by Godfrey Hounsfield in 1973,1 making this archive a valuable historical resource. To get access as a member, join the BIR at http://www.bir.org.uk/join-us/individual-membership/ As part of the continued development of BJR, a number of special features are scheduled for 2014, covering key areas in radiology, radiotherapy and radiobiology. A forensic radiology special feature, guest edited by Guiseppe Guglielmi, is scheduled for Spring 2014, as well as a special feature on radiobiology, guest edited by Kevin Prise and Stewart Martin, covering topics from vasculogenesis, tumour hypoxia and genomics and what we do and do not know about cancer from radiological imaging. Another feature on modern brachytherapy dosimetry—a radiotherapy topic that has seen significant development over recent years—is also scheduled for later on in the year. Keep a look out for them. If you would like to propose a topic for a special issue/feature, you can find our proposal form at http://bjr.birjournals.org/site/misc/Proposal_Form.pdf. We look forward to developing the journal and delivering the latest in high-quality research, review articles and related content in the year ahead. Thank you for all your continued support of BJR. We especially thank all the Deputy and Associate Editors (http://bjr.birjournals.org/site/misc/edboard.xhtml) and the reviewers; a list of those who reviewed papers in 2013 will be published in the February 2014 issue. David Bradley, Honorary Editor (Scientific) Nigel Hoggard, Honorary Editor (Medical)
