Abstract

Hans glacier moulins (Svalbard, 77°00' N– 15°50' E) have been observed during summer missions in 1988, 1989 (Schroeder 1991) and 1991. At the end of winter 1991–1992, we managed to open four of these snow covered moulins before the beginning of thaw. A total of 75 moulins have been located in the glacier' ablation zone from field observations. Twenty–three more were identified from infrared air photos (false colours; 1:50 000) taken in the summer of 1990. Fig. 1 gives the position of these 98 moulins. When many moulins are situated close together, their position is iden–tified as a small zone marked by a thick black line. The number of moulins in the zone is indicated. These moulins evacuate meltwater, actually effecting glacier thinning of approximately 1 m/year in the ablation zone (Jania 1988).
