Abstract

The inner hair cells (IHC), the outer hair cells (OHC) and the tectorial membrane (TM) in the cochlea of Rhinolophus ferrumequinum were studied with the scanning electron microscope. The auditory system of this bat is sharply tuned to a small frequency band around 83 kHz, the frequency of the constant-frequency segment of the animal's echolocation signal. On the basis of our observations it is clear that the cochlea of the horseshoe bat consists of two morphologically distinct regions.
