Abstract

1. 1. Biochemical studies were made of the protein of haemoglobin type A in the indigenous Bikaneri breed of Indian sheep. The amino acid composition of globin and its constitutent peptides was determined. N-terminal residues of globin and its α and β polypeptide chains were also determined. 2. 2. The primary structure of Bikaneri type A haemoglobin was identical to that described in non-Indian breeds of sheep. 3. 3. The implications of this with respect to the adaptive significance of haemoglobin types is considered.
