Abstract

Ocular induced anomalous head postures (AHP) which can be encountered in comitant strabismus may be of two different types: those which are strictly related to the strabismus and those which are only casually associated with strabismus. Among AHP which may be components of some forms of comitant strabismus we can consider: AHP in essential infantile esotropia; AHP in dissociated vertical deviation; AHP in patients with unilateral visual loss early in life and secondary strabismus of the eye with poor vision. Among AHP which are only casually associated with comitant strabismus we must consider AHP in congenital manifest nystagmus associated with strabismus. Let us consider the case of AHP in essential infantile esotropia. An AHP can be found in patients with unilateral visual loss from birth or with onset in early infancy who develop secondary, sensory esotropia of the eye with reduced visual acuity and show fixation preference in adduction of the sound eye.
