Abstract
AbstractAt a recent PSP Editorial Review Board meeting, the Board recommended that we periodically include an article that summarizes some major findings from safety bulletins and articles. This particular summary focuses on safety performance indicators.Industry has found that the traditional emphasis on personnel safety will not prevent the low probability and high consequence process accidents. Process accidents are prevented by identifying, measuring, analyzing, and adjusting key process activities or indicators. The development of a safety performance indicator program is an important management responsibility that will prevent process accidents.The motivation for and methods to develop an effective safety performance indicator program are discussed in this article. © 2010 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Process Saf Prog, 2010
