Abstract

Between December 10 and 12, 2001, the Chinese Communist Party's Central Committee and the State Council held a joint meeting on religion. The meeting, attended by key political figures such as former President Jiang Zemin and Premier Zhu Rongji, was probably the most important assessment of religion by the government since a similar meeting held in 1990. Among other highlights from that meeting, two observations can be made.
