Abstract

Gintaras V. Puskorius and Dr. Lee A. Feld- kamp have been selected to receive the 1995 IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON NEURAL NETWORKOS utstanding Paper Award for their paper "Neurocontrol of Nonlinear Dynamical Systems with Kalman Filter Trained Recurrent Networks," which appeared in the March 1994 issue of this TRANSACTIONS (vol. 5, no. 2, pp. 279-297). This award is sponsored by the IEEE Neural Networks Council, and it was presented at the IEEE International Conference on Neural Networks in Perth, Australia, on 30 November 1995. This outstanding paper has a highly informative introduction highlighting the pros and cons of the state-of-theart- techniques for neurocontrol and the motivation behind developing the proposed method. It successfully integrates the spirits of recurrent neural networks, dynamic backpropagation framework for neurocontrol, and an efficient second-order optimization algorithm, to develop the proposed extended Kalman filter neurocontroller. Finally, the paper includes careful simulations conducted based on well-known cart-pole and bioreactor benchmark problems as well as real-world engine idle speed control applications. Mr. Puskorius and Dr. Feldkamp are affiliated with the Scientific Research Laboratory of Ford Motor Company in Dearborn, MI, USA.
