Abstract
The bream (Abramis brama L.) population of Tjeukemeer was studied for three successive years. The growth, condition, gonad development, diet and feeding conditions of the fish are described. Food competition for two years with the then abundant young planktivorous smelt (Osmerus eperlanus) and perch (Perca fluviatilis) resulted in a decreased growth rate, condition and gonad development of the larger bream. The biomass of chironomids was too small in relation to that of the zooplankton to be important for the bream population, although they were eaten more efficiently.
