Abstract
Self-flux methods for growing millimeter-sized crystals of Tl2Ba2CaCu2O8 and centimeter-sized crystals of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 superconductors are described. Preparation protocols and post-synthesis oxygen treatments were devised to optimize sample quality, as manifested in dc magnetic susceptibility measurements. Other analytical methods, including Laue diffraction and secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), have been brought to bear to assess the quality of our samples and to evaluate the extent of contamination from crucibles. It was found that the TlBaCaCuO material, while occasionally comprising true single crystals, often consists of syntactic intergrowth crystals with two or three phases coexisting.
