Abstract

Greenberg proposed a model of drive theory which focuses on safety and effectance as primary motives for human behavior. In this paper, we elucidate Greenberg's theory, and apply it to persons with disabilities within a rehabilitation context. This model can add a great deal of specificity to understanding the conflicts people with disabilities may experience in their attempts at life adjustment. We utilize several case examples to illustrate that Greenberg's model is a useful tool to conceptualize and deal with client adjustment issues.
