Abstract

This section of theEducation Issueof<i>JAMA</i>contains information on graduate medical education in the US, Puerto Rico, and the Canal Zone. Graduate medical education programs in Canada are approved by the Canadian Medical Association or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. The<i>1978-1979 Directory of Residency Training Programs</i>contains a list of residency programs accredited by the Liaison Committee on Graduate Medical Education (LCGME) as of June 30, 1978. This directory also includes the "General Essentials" for a residency program, as well as the "Special Requirements" for each specialty. <h3>Graduates of Foreign Medical Schools</h3> The continuing decrease in the number of graduates of foreign medical schools who occupy house staff positions in the United States is illustrated in Table 1. There was a 33% decline in the total number of foreign graduate residents by December 1977 from the previous year. The decrease is most striking
