Abstract

Abstract The actions of European leaders in response to their large and marginalized Muslim communities have been increasingly troubling for the cause of human rights and civil liberties. As European governments push to assimilate religious minorities, they employ questionable methods that may serve to further radicalize and isolate Muslims. Across Europe religious liberties are violated through headscarf bans, intrusive monitoring of Muslim communities, deportations of imams, and financial control of mosques. These methods do nothing to win the hearts and minds of European Muslims. It is important that Muslim communities are encouraged to participate openly in public life, thus diminishing the appeal of extremism.
