Abstract

We agree with Lobb and McDonnell that factors contributing to the success of utilization of educational technology include dedicated instructors, effective technical support, simple and intuitive technology, and student ownership. R. H. G. was fortunate to have excellent technical support and collaboration from the school's computing facility manager (A. C.) and support specialist (F. S.). The more we try out and become familiar with these various educational technologies, the more they will become part of our toolbox for education and communication, just as e-mail and the Internet have now become. In the Discussion section of our article, we mentioned some examples for the use of seminar blogs in other educational settings, such as distance learning in which online video lectures are used. Our use of this example was not meant to imply that videocasted lectures are used exclusively in distance education. We concur with Lobb and McDonnell that there are many other settings in which video lectures are used and that YouTube (http://www.youtube.com) provides yet another venue for creative and interactive teaching, training, and learning. We appreciate Lobb and McDonnell describing some examples of their use of innovative teaching technologies. We hope others are stimulated to try these educational technologies to help achieve their learning objectives and to further their public health activities.
