Abstract

This chapter provides an overview about the global warming issue and the efforts exerted trying to reduce its effects through the control of greenhouse gas emissions and the use of clean renewable sources of energy. Continuous growth of using renewable energies in the different energy sectors is recorded. In 2017, the total share of renewable energy to the total energy consumption approached 18.1%. This chapter presents analysis of the growth of different sources of renewable energy and the distribution of renewable energy share among the different energy sectors. While the application of renewable energy is growing, the use of fossil fuels will continue providing a great portion of the required total energy demand, resulting in more CO2 emissions, which is the main contributor greenhouse gas for the global warming.
