Abstract

Sequential culture media systems have long been advocated as the ideal culture medium for human blastocyst formation. Such systems provide the growing embryo with varying concentrations and composition of media components, depending on their cell stage. In contrast, single-step media are now being advocated for the continuous growth of embryos from zygote to blastocyst stage, allowing the embryo to select the nutrients it needs. There is still some question as regards whether single-step media should be refreshed on day 3 to achieve good rates of blastocyst formation.
