Abstract

Employers are seeking specific training and education which is tailored to the needs of their particular work force rather than relying on the educational packages that have previously been offered by universities and colleges. More people are accessing further and higher education and there is a growth in non-traditional modes of learning. With a myriad of opportunities available it is important that healthcare workers should be able to maximize their learning. This article summarizes current perspectives of the sources of learning and how this learning can be recognized through a credit-based system. The term ‘credit’ in higher education is explored in terms of its constituent elements and how it relates to academic levels. The importance of a nationally agreed system which uses credit as the basis for academic award such as a higher education diploma or degree will be outlined.
