Abstract
Each quarter, I never know who will walk through the doors of my ten-week, undergraduate survey course, The Black Family. While black liberal arts majors and white teacher trainees together comprise the majority of each group of sixty students, past classes have held some real surprises. For example, a West Indian woman from a family of thirteen siblings, the sixty year old white wife of a local corporate executive, and nine nurses arranged in a tidy, uniformed row have all taken the course.
