Abstract
Systemic racism is still embedded in our society. As writer/director Jordan Peele says, the film “exposes the lie of post-racial America.” The film exposes casual racism: first, Chris and Rose’s interracial relationship raises complications from the start. When Chris returns to the house after smoking a cigarette at night, he has a conversation with Missy, Rose’s mother. The story revolves around Chris’s personal and private lives, so his work/professional life isn’t mentioned often, but from the information we do get, we can tell that he is a talented urban photographer. Chris’s internal conflict comes from being in an interracial relationship. As Chris tries to force himself out of the house, Missy sends him to the “sunken place” by clinking a silver spoon against a teacup. Chris, the protagonist, confronts the Armitages, the antagonists, and he loses.
