Abstract

A praise of Gerard Defaux, an expert in French Renaissance literature, this opening essay starts by pointing out the main achievements of Defaux as a specialist in Rabelais, Clement Marot, Maurice Sceve and Montaigne. It then pays hommage to Defaux as a fighter, a scholar who committed himself passionately to the defense of his ideas, notably the Christian dimension of Humanism and the rejection of deconstructionist theories.
