Abstract

THE PIEDMONT ZONE is characterized by the juxtaposition of upland and lowland and by the existence of a slope between the two (Denny, 1967). In arid areas the piedmont zone contains a variety of erosional and aggradational landforms. Erosional piedmonts, or pediments (Oberlander, 1989) are represented in south-central Tunisia by a series of nested erosion surfaces (Fig. 1A), known as glacis d'erosion (Coque, 1962: 247). Aggradational piedmonts are characterized by alluvial fans, linked to the drainage basins by trunk streams which are commonly entrenched into the fan surface at the fanhead.
