Abstract

The AGU panel appointed in December to draft a Union position on U.S. geomagnetic observatories (Eos, 1987, p . 1793) reported to the Council in May at the AGU Spring Meeting in Baltimore. Congressman David E. Skaggs (D‐Colo.), of th e House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, had asked AGU for its position on combining the geomagnetic observatory programs of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The panel was chaired by Michael A. Mayhew; members were Daniel N. Baker, Subir K. Banerjee, Dana J . Isherwood, and Christopher T. Russell. The Council considered the issue and adopted the position stated in the following from AGU President Peter S. Eagleson to Skaggs. Skaggs's reply follows Eagleson's letter.
