Abstract

Geological and geophysical surveys accompanied with check wells are now conducted in the Yuki City area, for the purpose of finding a geological condition suitable for the underground storage of gas. There, under thin Quaternary cover, developed the Miocene series and the Pliocene, and their detailed rock sequences are established by check wells. The Pliocene series are rather thin, and its base lies about 240m deep. The Miocene series are thick, and are divided into three, each of them being separated by unconformity. Natural gas indication was found from the well-core of the depth 1, 180m∼1, 397m in the Miocene sequence. Gaschromatograph analysis showed that some of the Miocene mudstone are rich in organic carbon, and are considered as a prolific mother rock of oil and natural gas. We could find the Miocene mudstone of the same quality in the Kasukabe City area in 1962.Consequently we can expect the wide development of the mother rock of oil and natural gas in the Kanto plains.
