Abstract

The release of antibiotic, gentamicin sulfate, from chitosan/collagen composites was studied using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis. Chitosan and collagen mixtures were prepared by mixing two solutions at different weight ratios: 75/25, 50/50, 25/75. Gentamicin sulfate was added to the mixture of two biopolymers and then films were obtained through evaporation of the solvent. Results showed that gentamicin sulfate can be incorporated in the material made of the blends of chitosan and collagen, and moreover, the antibiotic release rate can be adjusted and controlled by the alteration of the weight ratios of the components. The highest antibiotic release was observed for chitosan and collagen composite at the 75/25 ratio.
