Abstract

Tetracycline antibiotics and their semisynthetic derivatives are now being widely used clinically and veterinarily. Industrial strains — the producers of oxy- and chlortetracycline (Otc and Ctc) are the objects of long-term conventional selection and possess high level of antibiotic activity. In recent years considerable success has been met in research on genetic control of Otc biosynthesis in Streptomyces rimosus strains. All genes for Otc biosynthesis are localized on one long DNA fragment of about 34 kb1,2,8. The genes for biosynthesis are flanked by genes responsible for resistance to Otc, otrA and otrB, “early” biosynthesis genes being linked to otrB and “late” genes to otrA. Coordinated transcription of resistance and biosynthesis genes has been demonstrated.
