Background: Generativity—the concern for guiding future generations and contributing to societal well-being—serves as an indicator of quality of life in various social contexts. This is especially pertinent among rural educators who may face limited organizational resources but benefit from community support. Method: Following PRISMA-ScR guidelines, this scoping review utilized databases like Scopus and Science Direct to explore the impact of generativity on rural educators' objective and subjective quality of life, comparing findings with other work and altruistic contexts. Nineteen studies published in English between 2013 and 2023 were included. Results: In both work and altruistic settings, generativity positively correlates with life satisfaction, job satisfaction, and psychological well-being. Specifically, in rural educational environments where teachers face unique challenges yet develop strong community bonds and high subjective well-being, generativity is linked to personal satisfaction, resilience, community engagement, and cultural practices. Conclusions: The review underscores the importance of generativity in enhancing quality of life across societal activities, particularly among rural educators who influence educational outcomes and bolster community resilience. These findings suggest that fostering generativity through targeted professional development and community engagement programs could improve educators' well-being and effectiveness, especially in resource-limited rural settings.

  • Karen Cristiane Pereira De Morais + 5 more

Introduction: Among the professions that are impacted by the work context, the military firefighter is mentioned, who carries out activities with danger, physical and emotional exhaustion, which can have an impact on quality of life. Objective: To analyze the relation between quality of sleep and quality of life of Brazilian Military Firefighters. Methods: Research with a quantitative, transversal, correlational and analytical approach, carried out with 129 military firefighters working in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, that had been performing operational and administrative assistance for more than six months. Questionnaires containing socio-occupational and lifestyle data, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and the World Health Organization Quality of Life to assess quality of life were used. Descriptive and analytical statistics were used. Results: The analysis of quality of life shows a higher average in the physical domain (77.52), a direct correlation between the physical domain and the other quality of life domains, and inverse correlations between global sleep quality and the domains of quality of life. Regarding sleep quality, a higher percentage of poor classification (71.3%) is observed in military firefighters. Conclusion: There was a predominance of workers with poor sleep quality and good perception of general quality of life. An inverse correlation was identified between sleep quality and the domains of quality of life. When comparing quality of life with sleep quality domains, a significant difference was identified.

Promotion of nursing workers quality of life (QOL): managerial responsibility of nurses
  • Jan 1, 2008
  • Online Brazilian Journal of Nursing
  • Vivian Aline Mininel + 1 more

Introduction - The illness rate of nursing workers, as well as the destructive factors in their work environment have been evidenced in several Brazilian research papers1,2,3,4. The nursing manager has the potential to change this reality and promote a better working quality of life (QOL) 5. Objective - To analyze actions that are directed towards the promotion of nursing workers QOL developed by managerial nurses. Methodology - This study utilized a qualitative approach based on the reference of social determination of the health-illness process. The setting was a university hospital located in the center-west region of Brazil. The study group consisted of 22 nursing workers from different units and different work shifts. Qualitative data was collected by a focus group. This study was approved by Ethics Committee of the University of Sao Paulo Nursing School and all participants gave their free informed consent. Main results - The analyzed data showed that QOL and quality of work (QOW) are strongly linked and that motivation and satisfaction for work come from the interaction and recognition with the object of work (patients), as well as with relationships established among the work team; that the exposition to diverse workloads configures a destructive health profile and its consequence is a decrease in QOL; that there are no institutional programs or actions that promote work QOL. Still, this analysis makes possible the apprehension of psychic strain suffered by nurses in general, through the changes in work context and the impact from this in the nursing workers QOL; that the changes and the strains compromise the performance of these nurses as managers of the team, promoting physical and mental strain in the fulfillment of organizational goals; that have no initiatives directed to the promotion of workers' QOL as a managerial responsibility and these are relegated to the second level due to emergency situations demanded in day-to-day work. Conclusion - This study shows that there are almost no evident proposals for promoting nursing workers' QOL or, and those which do exist, are extremely vague. It also demonstrates that this absence of institutional policies regarding this subject also affects managerial nurses, who without an organizational structure cannot perform their role as a caregiver of the nursing team consequently increasing the rate of nursing illness to them and the nursing team.

The relationship between presenteeism, quality of life and social support in higher education professionals: A cross-sectional path analysis.
  • Apr 21, 2022
  • PLOS ONE
  • Sónia Magalhães + 2 more

Presenteeism is the practice of being present at workplace, but not being able to carry out all the tasks due to health problems. Social support globally associated with health and wellbeing might positively influence presenteeism and consequently, the quality of life of these professionals. With this in mind, the aim of this study was to investigate the relationships between presenteeism, quality of life and social support in the work of non-teaching and non-research professionals within the context of higher education. A cross-sectional study was conducted, in which sociodemographic data were collected and the Portuguese versions of the Stanford Presenteeism Scale (SPS-6) (which includes the dimensions work-completed and distraction avoided) and Quality of Life Index (EUROSHIS-QOL-8) and the subscales of Supervisor’s Social Support and Peers’ Social Support of the Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire (COPSOQ) were used. The questionnaire was applied online, and 322 professionals from a public university higher education institution in Northern Portugal participated in the study. Presenteeism was reported by 97 (30.1%) professionals. The peers’ social support was positively associated with quality of life. The supervisor’s social support was positively associated with distraction avoided and work completed and positively indirectly associated with quality of life, and the association was mediated by distraction avoided. We conclude that implementing strategies that can promote social support in the work context, namely strengthening networks between colleagues and competent and well-trained supervisors may prevent or reduce presenteeism in higher education professionals, as well as, provide a better quality of life.

  • Bente Birkeland + 5 more

ObjectiveTo examine the existing body of knowledge on quality of life (QoL) in partners of people with substance use problems (PP-SUPs) to provide a synthesized summary of the evidence and identify gaps in our knowledge on the QoL of PP-SUPs.MethodsA systematic scoping review was performed. Publications indexed in EMBASE, Medline, PsycINFO, CINAHL, SocINDEX, and CENTRAL were searched for original, empirical, peer-reviewed, full-length research papers that examined QoL in PP-SUPs. Research papers identified through a manual search of key references and known references by co-authors were also included. A total of 3070 abstracts were screened, 41 full-text papers examined, and nine were found to meet the inclusion criteria. Eligibility was determined in two steps by four and two independent researchers, respectively. The main findings were explored by content analysis.ResultsEight of the nine included studies had quantitative designs, one had a mixed methods design, and no qualitative studies were found. Three studies were conducted exclusively among PP-SUPs, whereas the others included various subgroups. A majority of participants were women, and no study was conducted exclusively among men. Nearly half of the studies reported on whether there were minor children in the PP-SUPs’ household. The studies used established and generic QoL instruments based on different conceptual and theoretical perspectives on QoL. A majority of the studies found lower QoL in PP-SUPs than in general population, with substance use by the person with a SUP having the most impact on QoL of all evaluated factors. Two studies reported that gender was associated with QoL, with poor QoL being associated with being a male partner and vice versa for female partners.ConclusionsFurther research is needed to examine QoL in PP-SUPs exclusively. A variety of QoL instruments covering various, but limited, dimensions of the concept have been used in previous studies of PP-SUPs. Thus, obtaining a comprehensive understanding of PP-SUPs’ QoL is challenging. Both qualitative and large-scale quantitative designs should be used in research on QoL in PP-SUPs, particularly among those with a parenting role.

Quality of life in people living with HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder: A scoping review study.
  • May 19, 2021
  • PloS one
  • Kate Alford + 3 more

Quality of life (QoL) is recognized as an essential end point in the disease management of chronic conditions such as HIV with calls to include good QoL as a 'fourth 90' in the 90-90-90 testing and treatment targets introduced by World Health Organization in 2016. Cognitive impairments impact a broad spectrum of experiences and are a common issue effecting people living with HIV (PLWH). Despite this, few studies have examined QoL in PLWH who also have a cognitive disorder. This study aimed to synthesize and describe what is known about QoL in those living with HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND). A scoping review of peer-reviewed literature was conducted to identify how QoL has been investigated and measured in PLWH with HAND, and how PLWH with HAND report and describe their QoL. We searched PsychInfo, Medline, Scopus, and Web of Science along with hand-searching reference lists from relevant studies found. Included studies were those published in English after 1st January 2003 which included PLWH with cognitive impairment not due to other pre-existing conditions. Fifteen articles met criteria for inclusion. Two studies measured QoL as a primary aim, with others including QoL assessment as part of a broader battery of outcomes. The MOS-HIV and SF-36 were the most commonly used measures of overall QoL, with findings generally suggestive of poorer overall QoL in PLWH with HAND, compared to PLWH without cognitive impairment. Studies which examined dimensions of QoL focused exclusively on functionality, level of independence, and psychological QoL domains. There is a considerable dearth of research examining QoL in PLWH with HAND. The initiatives which advocate for healthy aging and improved QoL in PLWH must be extended to include and understand the experiences those also living with cognitive impairment. Research is needed to understand the broad experiential impacts of living with these two complex, chronic conditions, to ensure interventions are meaningful to patients and potential benefits are not missed.

Research is still limited on nutrition and quality of life among older adults.
  • Sep 12, 2023
  • Frontiers in medicine
  • Mary Beth Arensberg + 5 more

Globally, the number of older adults is growing exponentially. Yet, while living longer, people are not necessarily healthier. Nutrition can positively impact healthy aging and quality of life (QoL). Two decades ago, nutrition and diet were rarely viewed as key QoL domains, were not part of QoL screening, and QoL studies frequently used unvalidated tools. It is unclear how the nutrition and QoL research area may have since evolved. A scoping review was conducted in Pubmed of research with community-living older adults (aged ≥65) from developed economies that included 1 of 29 common, valid QoL instruments, nutrition indices, and was published between 1/2000-12/2022. The review followed published methodology guidance and used the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) flow diagram to document identified studies and record number of included/excluded studies (based on scoping review's pre-specified criteria). Of 258 studies identified initially, 37 fully met scoping review inclusion criteria; only 2 were QoL studies, 30 focused on nutrition, 3 on measurement tool validation/testing, and 2 were other study types. Most studies (n = 32) were among populations outside of North America; majority were conducted in Europe (n = 22) where the EuroQol 5 Dimension (Eq5D) was used in >1/2 the studies. Of 5 North American studies, the 36-Item Short Form Survey (SF-36) was most frequently used (n = 4). Myriad nutrition indices described various aspects of eating, dietary intake, and nutrition status, making comparability between studies difficult. Studies included several different nutrition questionnaires; Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) (n = 8) or Mini Nutritional Assessment Short Form (MNA-SF) (n = 5) were used most frequently. The most frequent anthropometric measure reported was Body Mass Index (BMI) (n = 28). Nutrition-related biochemical indices were reported infrequently (n = 8). The paucity of studies over the last two decades suggests research on nutrition and QoL among community-living older adults remains underdeveloped. Valid QoL instruments and nutrition indices are now available. To ensure greater comparability among studies it is important to develop consensus on core indices of QoL and particularly nutrition. Greater agreement on these indices will advance further research to support healthy aging and improve QoL for community-dwelling older adults.

Instruments for the assessment of quality of life in children and adolescents with Down syndrome: a scoping review
  • Oct 30, 2024
  • BMC Pediatrics
  • Eliana-Isabel Rodríguez-Grande + 5 more

The construct of quality of life (QoL) includes aspects of health and well-being of people. Down syndrome [DS] or trisomy 21 is one of the most common congenital anomalies. DS is characterized by motor and cognitive alterations that affect health and QOL of both the child and caregiver. In pediatrics, there are various instruments to assess Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) and QoL. The advantage of these instruments is that they can be implemented in any type of disease and population in general. However, they may have certain disadvantages, such as the difficulty in evaluating specific aspects of each disease or condition related to Down syndrome. The aim of this study was to identify 1: instruments used to assess quality of life in children with Down syndrome. 2: psychometrics properties of instruments validated in children with Down syndrome to assess quality of life. Methods A Scoping review was conducted to identify instruments used in children and adolescents with Down syndrome, and a second systematic searched psychometric properties of these instruments. The electronic databases PubMed, Embase, Epistemonikos and other sources were explored with a search strategy that included keywords such as “Down syndrome,” “Quality of life” or “Life Quality,” “Health-Related Quality of Life” and psychometrics properties. The quality of the included studies was evaluated using the COSMIN (Based Standards for the Selection of Health Measurement Instruments) methodology. Results Twenty-seven studies were selected that used twelve instruments to evaluate quality of life in children or adolescents with Down syndrome. Two of the twelve evaluated quality of life and ten health-related quality of life. In the second search, ten studies reported the psychometric properties of six instruments evaluated in minors with Down Syndrome. Conclusion There is limited information available regarding the psychometric properties of instruments used to assess quality of life, particularly health-related quality of life. Commonly employed instruments in this area include the PedsQL 4.0 and KIDSCREEN. Notably, while the PedsQL 4.0 lacks specific evaluation in children with DS, data from KIDSCREEN assessments are inconsistently reported. Rigorous evaluation of the performance of Kidslife and Kidslife Down in clinical settings is necessary, or the development of new instruments tailored for children with DS is warranted to comprehensively assess quality of life in clinical settings.
