Abstract

In this letter, a new generalized alpha plane (GAP) is proposed for numerical differential protection applications. Its performance is thoroughly evaluated for a wide variety of faults simulated in a 500 kV three-terminal transmission line using the Alternative Transients Program. The obtained results reveal that in comparison with the only other GAP reported in the literature, the proposed formulation may lead the differential protection function to have a more well-behaved response in the alpha plane, besides having a rather simpler formulation.
