Abstract

We show that E 6 superstring-inspired models may have the matter parity needed to eliminate dimension three and four baryon and lepton number violating operators. This leads us to discuss generalisations of matter parity in which these operators are suppressed by discrete symmetries larger than Z 2, and which have potentially important phenomenological implications: the lightest superpartner may be unstable and there may be exotic higher dimension operators for baryon and lepton number violation.
