Abstract

This investigation presents a depth basement map and geologic profiles of the Falcon basin, calculated from the spectral decomposition of gravity anomalies, derived from the global geopotential model EGM2008. The interpretation of radial averaged power spectra gives us depth estimations for several gravity sources, which are the result of rock density contrasts. The results show the principal geological structures that control the tectonic behavior of the basin, related with the origin of the Falcon and Bonaire basins, and the thrusting of nappes onto the northwestern region of Venezuela. Besides, it shows approximately the boundary between Trujillo and Maracaibo blocks, the breakdown of the Leeward Antilles and the emplacements of rock bodies onto the Paraguana Peninsula.
