Abstract

This study examined the interactions of gender diversity and organizational strategies on organizational outcomes. Using a longitudinal sample of large Canadian organizations, we found gender diversity had a negative effect on organizational productivity, but was positively associated with organizational innovation when an expansion, an improvement, or a cost strategy was adopted. These findings support a contingency approach to research on diversity. Our study also contributes to the current understanding of diversity and strategic management.
