Abstract
Rural architecture, which we can describe as “master work” by the masters who have grown up with experience and knowledge transferred from generation to generation, has emerged with local materials and traditions. In rural architecture, based on climate, geography, geological structure, soil, water, local materials, life culture and economy, functionality has been more important when compared with the aesthetin concerns. “Beehives”, named also as “bee house”, “bee mansion” popularly, can be found in Elmali, Korkuteli and Kumluca districts of Antalya, Kaynarca Plateau of Hadimbagli Dedemli Village in Konya, Bozkir/Tufanderesi, Sorkun/Bespinar and Korualan/Yenice. Besides these examples, beehives are also found out in the Akoluk and Camlica quarters at the anamur border of Gazipasa District. In this study, Gazipasa beehives are classified and evaluated by considering their locations and distibution in the region. Consequently, architectural form, construction technique, rural use, local properties and comparison with regional examples are discussed in the paper.
