Abstract

For charge exchange spectroscopy at large tokamaks accurate knowledge is needed of the underlying electron capture processes. Recent experimental advances in determining state selective cross sections for electron capture by multiply charged ions are discussed. Special attention is paid to the possibly crucial role of metastable atoms as electron donors and to the first photon spectra obtained at eV/amu collision energies.
