Abstract

Biopsy of the gastric mucosa is an integral part of a number of diagnostic and therapeutic gastroenterologic assessments. For example, biopsy of the gastric antrum followed by urease testing or histologic examination is a sensitive method to detect Helicobacter pylori. 1 Brown KE Peura DA Diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori infection. Gastric biopsy is also used in patients receiving long-term acid suppression with proton-pump inhibitors to quantitate gastric mucosal endocrine cell populations. 3 Solcia E Rindi G Havu N Elm G Qualitative studies of gastric endocrine cells in patients treated long-term with omeprazole.
