Recent studies have highlighted the didactic usefulness of school gardens, both as a pedagogical context and for their capacity to promote the development of various competences and contents. However, there is not many information about the existence, characteristics or the didactic use of these resources. The aim of this paper is to analyse the presence and didactic use of school gardens in Vitoria-Gasteiz. For this purpose, a field research was carried out in two phases. In the first one, a telephone questionnaire was used and in the second, a face-to-face questionnaire was addressed to those responsible for the gardens (who were identified through the previous questionnaire). The results show that in Vitoria-Gasteiz there is a large presence of school gardens and a high didactic use of them, with many interesting experiences, although there is still room for improvement. To this end, teacher training and networking among schools is recommended.

The results of research on the didactic usefulness of the visual and sound landscape developed at the Teacher Training Faculty of the University of Valencia are shown. Following a mixed methodology with qualitative and quantitative questionnaires, the concept that future teachers have of agricultural landscapes and their possibilities as an educational resource is analysed. The sample consisted of 146 teachers in training for the Primary School Teacher Degree. The results show that sound and visual landscapes improve the understanding of natural phenomena from an interdisciplinary approach and promote the teachers’ competence development.

The Development of Computational Thinking in Student Teachers through an Intervention with Educational Robotics

Aim/Purpose: This research aims to describe and demonstrate the results of an intervention through educational robotics to improve the computational thinking of student teachers. Background: Educational robotics has been increasing in school classrooms for the development of computational thinking and digital competence. However, there is a lack of research on how to prepare future teachers of Kindergarten and Elementary School in the didactic use of computational thinking, as part of their necessary digital teaching competence. Methodology: Following the Design-Based Research methodology, we designed an intervention with educational robots that includes unplugged, playing, making and remixing activities. Participating in this study were 114 Spanish university students of education. Contribution: This research helps to improve the initial training of student teachers, especially in the field of educational robotics. Findings: The student teachers consider themselves digital competent, especially in the dimensions related to social and multimedia aspects, and to a lesser extent in the technological dimension. The results obtained also confirm the effectiveness of the intervention through educational robotics in the development of computational thinking of these students, especially among male students. Recommendations for Practitioners: Teacher trainers could introduce robotics following these steps: (1) initiation and unplugged activities, (2) gamified activities of initiation to the programming and test of the robots, (3) initiation activities to Scratch, and (4) design and resolution of a challenge. Recommendation for Researchers: Researchers could examine how interventions with educational robots helps to improve the computational thinking of student teachers, and thoroughly analyze gender-differences. Impact on Society: Computational thinking and robotics are one of the emerging educational trends. Despite the rise of this issue, there are still few investigations that systematize and collect evidence in this regard. This study allows to visualize an educational intervention that favors the development of the computational thinking of student teachers. Future Research: Researchers could evaluate not only the computational thinking of student teachers, but also their didactics, their ability to teach or create didactic activities to develop computational thinking in their future students.

Analysis of the didactic use of tablets in the European Higher Education Area

This article presents a study in which we analyse the didactic use of tablets in the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). The competential and didactic use of mobile devices is a challenge for lecturers, students and universities alike. In the current university system, mobile devices play a key role that requires rigorous analysis to open up new channels of participation and didactic design in accordance with the EHEA. The research is contextualised in a sample of 419 students from three Spanish public universities: Complutense University of Madrid (UCM), University of Oviedo and National University of Distance Education (UNED), Spain. Through a quantitative and qualitative methodological approach, we proceeded to analyse the life stories of students who are familiar with tablets and use them in both their personal lives and for their university studies. The results show that this mobile device can be a useful resource in information processing, content access and creation, and generic competency development in line with the Dublin Descriptors and the main recommendations of the Tuning, Reflex and EUConverge European projects.

What to Expect When You Are Simulating?

While simulation is a proven teaching strategy, it has not had much development in the training of teachers. However, it has a lot of potential: risk elimination, high quality learning, reflective practice, didactic use of error, transition between theory, and practice. In addition to it, educational technology further enhances this potential: immersive digital environments enhance the realism of the simulations, help reflection, help overcome the time-space limitations, etc. To know the state of the matter on the potentialities of digital simulations in the training of teachers, a systematic review of the literature is organized, which allows us to know both the advances and the limitations in the use of this didactic strategy. On the one hand, it has been shown that digital simulations are effective in teacher training and that help cover current gaps; on the other hand, it is evident that there are technological limitations and shortcomings in research.

Digital Teaching Competence and Space Competence with TPACK in Social Sciences

Research on training in knowledge related to geolocation with technologies shows the training potentials and limitations that these resources offer for teachers in training. This study examines the perceptions of the instructional effectiveness of mobile devices and geolocation software, by analyzing the performance in the TPACK skills dimensions of future teachers (n = 421). A mixed methodology has been implemented, with a descriptive cross-sectional approach as well as inferential analysis based on a questionnaire (α ≥ .918) and the tasks carried out by the sample. The results show a poor didactic use of technologies while confirming the acquisition of knowledge about geolocation. This corroborates the benefits of applying an improvement in the digital competence of teachers in training.

The use of EduBlog in initial teachers training: an experience of a teaching innovation project

Digital technologies are central elements of today's society. In this context to achieve an adequate degree of development of Digital Competence for professional performance is essential, as well as for life in society and the exercise of citizenship. Higher Education must actively contribute to develop Digital Competence, training students to effectively use digital technologies. That need is exacerbated in the case of initial teacher training, not only because of the progress towards a digitalized school, but also because of the fundamental role in the training of future generations. With the aim of promoting the development of Digital Teaching Competence, this paper presents an innovation project implemented in the Degree of Teacher of Nursery and Primary Education of the University of Valencia that is based on the didactic use of EduBlog. The selection of this digital tool responds to its multiple benefits on the work of curricular content, the development of digital skills and the creation of a positive climate in the classroom. The project developed with a total of 131 second-year students demonstrates that the use of EduBlog has a positive impact on the learning process and on the increase in student engagement and motivation.

Collaborative Teaching Experience at the University of Deusto

In recent years, a new training model has been implemented at the University of Deusto, focused on the development of competences and on the integration of technology in the classroom. Within this framework, known as the University of Deusto’s Learning Model, the work has been oriented to the selection of the most suitable technologies, teachers training for their didactic use, dissemination and sharing of knowledge among professionals, experimentation in class, and evaluation of different experiences. To further facilitate the integration of educational technology, and after a thorough both pedagogical and technological research and analysis, a standardization tool of learning scenarios has been designed where Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning is aligned with the learning model to support collaborative learning, and thus promote co-creation of knowledge and mutual help among students. This chapter describes the process followed at the university to integrate collaborative technologies in the educational context, agents involved in the process, and how available technologies with competences are combined to achieve educational objectives.

Attitues of Teachers in Initial Training Videogames

Videogames (VGs), as a didactic resource, are an idiosyncratic tool that they generate diverse work dynamics and relationships in the classroom. This article opens up from the premise the previous recreational experience with VGs could determine later didactic use. In this way, the present study tries to characterize the teachers in initial formation on the use of the VGs, on the hypothesis that different profiles of VGs player could be found among the teachers in initial formation. The purpose of this study was to analyze the use of the VGs from a playful perspective, the tastes they have about the types and contents of the VGs and the motives that can attract the subject towards their use. Through a survey method of a total of 659 teachers in training, a non-parametric descriptive study was carried out. It is also accompanied by a descriptive factorial model. Factors such as gender or titling are key to the different variables treated. The work is accompanied by a discussion of results.

Comparative Analysis between Virtual Visits and Pedagogical Outings to Heritage Sites: An Application in the Teaching of History

In recent years, the teaching and learning of history have been transformed by the incorporation of active methodologies and digital tools. Virtual reality (VR) is one such tool that is being increasingly used in classrooms. It allows students to visit and experience spaces from other historical periods, even those that have been lost. However, due to its relatively slow adoption in formal educational settings, there is still a paucity of scientific references where this type of experience has been empirically tested to prove its potential benefits. Further research on this issue is therefore needed. This study presents a comparative analysis of the didactic use of historical heritage from the Roman period using two different methodological strategies: an educational visit to a museum and a virtual tour via electronic devices. The main objective is to compare the effectiveness of these two methods in terms of usability, learning outcomes, and emotional responses. The study was conducted with 51 primary school teachers in training. Data were collected using two ad hoc questionnaires, which were based on a previous one. A hybrid analysis methodology was adopted, with SPSS used for interpreting the quantitative data and Atlas Ti for the qualitative information. The results indicate that the two methodologies were perceived by future teachers as valuable resources for learning and teaching history. The emotions they evoked were primarily curiosity, joy, and motivation, with only minor occurrences of frustration, nervousness, or fear. The experience gained from this first application will make it possible to extend the study to other educational levels, to enrich the conclusions obtained and to evaluate the potential scope of using this combination of methods to develop historical competences and improve heritage education.

This article describes how the use of education technology by those responsible for teacher training is one of the training issues that are often associated with the importance of enhancing didactic efficiency and the procedural and logistical difficulties associated with the instructional design that are identified as the main sources of concern in the professionalization of teachers and sometimes lead to unjustified assumptions about the very nature of the formation. Understanding attitudes towards ICT is important in determining whether future teachers' perceptions about the advantages or disadvantages of using ICT in higher education may condition their proper use in teaching as this provides the basics for professional conduct that is most appropriate. The present article aims to investigate the attitudes of personal and didactic use of technologies and the perception of their digital skills in students attending the Degree Course in Primary Teacher Education at the University of Aquila Studies.

Gamification and mobile learning: innovative experiences to motivate and optimise music content within university contexts

This study aims to analyse the extent to which gamification tools and multimedia resources (i.e. Cuadernia, Kahoot, Quizizz, and Socrative) can serve in learning strategies for education, achievement, participation and motivation during student teacher training in the subject of Musical Education and its Didactics and within the general context of higher education. We use a quantitative methodological approach with a quasi-experimental design and surveys as assessment tools. All 62 participants were studying Musical Education and its Didactics in their Bachelor’s Degree in Primary Education at a private Spanish university and had finished their internship period. Application of the gamification strategy proved effective for dynamic teaching-learning. Findings show how the appropriate teacher training in didactic use of information and communication technologies (ICT) can achieve positive educational results when used correctly. ICT teaching practices for music education should be implemented with an adequate didactic approach for best results.

Teachers’ Perceptions of the Use of ICTs in the Educational Response to Students with Disabilities

The educational response to students with specific needs for educational support associated with disability could not be understood within the current educational landscape without addressing how Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is used within those responses. ICT support is not a matter of fashion or one-off use due to the current circumstances brought about by the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Programmes and materials are already being developed to enable such application. Even from the Universal Learning Design approaches, it is precisely the use of technologies in learning processes, with special emphasis on educational inclusion processes, which are a key focus. This study deals with the perception that teachers have of this use of ICT with students with disabilities: How are the resources available to them and how good is their training in this respect? To do this, a section of a questionnaire was used, which forms part of the R + D + I project awarded under a national call in Spain, and which in one of its categories precisely focuses attention on this use of ICT. In turn, this category, according to the confirmatory factor analysis carried out, is subdivided into three subcategories: didactic use, spaces and resources, and finally teacher training. We are also interested in knowing if there are differences of opinion between population groups grouped according to sex, ownership of the education centre and location of the centre (urban, or rural). The results indicate that although there is good use and good preparation of teachers, the level of resources is low and teacher training needs to be reinforced.

Realidad Aumentada (RA) y Procesos Didácticos en la Universidad: Estudio Descriptivo de Nuevas Aplicaciones para el Desarrollo de Competencias Digitales

La inclusión de novedosas tecnologías digitales en el mundo universitario requiere el análisis de sus ventajas e inconvenientes. Tanto para su empleo didáctico en la búsqueda de alcanzar distintos objetivos formativos como para el desarrollo de competencias digitales en el alumnado es necesario establecer experiencias que nos permitan obtener información para su correcto uso. Es el objetivo principal de esta investigación, que se fundamenta en un trabajo de campo inmersivo con realidad aumentada (RA) que tuvo como muestra a estudiantes universitarios a lo largo de dos cursos académicos. La metodología empleada en este trabajo exploratorio es descriptiva y cualitativa, para el que se han usado diferentes aplicaciones de RA. Como resultado principal se ha podido determinar que la integración de estas apps contribuye de manera significativa a la mejora de la competencia digital de los estudiantes universitarios a la vez que potencia la motivación en el aprendizaje. Sin embargo, se presenta como inconveniente principal su escasa presencia en las aulas y la necesidad de una formación previa del profesorado en su correcto empleo.

Teachers’ experience and training with visual diagrams production

This study aims to explore the experience and training of pre-service and in-service teachers (n = 470) using visual diagrams. For this purpose, they answered a questionnaire regarding their training and experience with them throughout their entire education. The results show that teachers’ experience with visual diagrams was very limited at all educational stages and subjects. They consider them valuable for learning, but they have received little instruction on diagrams, copying existing materials rather than producing original ones. They mainly produced their own visual diagrams in Natural and Social Sciences. They also produced other type of diagrams (mainly quantitative and verbal) in non-STEM subjects. The results indicate a need to provide teachers with training and opportunities to practice with visual diagrams, and to make them competent to use them in their teaching to increase their didactic use with their students throughout the educational system.
