Abstract

Gas-metal interactions play an important role during the production and in the lifetime of a steel. This paper will discuss in detail some processes, especially the surface reaction kinetics and mechanisms in the carburization and decarburization of iron in CH4-H2 and CO-H2O-H2 gas mixtures. From the knowledge of these reactions information can be derived on the steady state carbon activity and the methane reforming in CH4-H2O-H2 and CH4-CO2-CO. the relations to application problems are shown up and also correlations to some results of modern surface analytical methods (AES, LEED).
