Abstract

A preliminary study showed that oysters (Crassostrea virginica) may be gaped for mechanical shucking by use of shock wave energy. Among the devices available for producing shock wave energy, the General Electric Electrohydraulic System and the PAR Air Gun were examined. Results indicate that as much as 87% of the total number of oysters subjected to treatment can be gaped at a rate of about one oyster per second.
