Abstract

The gametophytic generation of Niphidium macbridei (Polypodiaceae) was studied, including spore germination, morphological development of the gametophytes, its major vegetative features and reproductive behaviour. This is the second species of the genus whose gametophytes have been observed after N. crassifolium. Spore germinating follows the Vittaria type and the developmental pattern is of the Drynaria type. Adult gametophytes are cordate and hairy, with unicellular secretory hairs located in both the margin and the surface of the prothalli. Niphidium macbridei produces archegonia but never develops antheridia in culture. When the gametophytes are old production of (sub)marginal and less abundant laminar filaments begins, finally ending as adventitious gametophytes.
