Abstract

Cream is a semi-solid emulsion dosage form either a water-in-oil type (W/O) or an oil in water (O/W) containing one or more dissolved or dispersed ingredients in the corresponding base material (containing no less than 60% water). Cream is usually used as an emollient or drug use on the skin (Ansel, 2008). Cream has the advantage that it is practical in use, easy to wash with water and easily spread evenly. Therefore, the researchers tried to make a cream with raw materials rhizome Galangal rhizome so that its use was more practical. According to Darmono (2008), Galangal rhizome has various properties such as antifungal and antibacterial. Galangal rhizome has active substances and 1-asetoksikhavikol asetat (ACA). 1-asetoksikhavikol asetat (ACA) is an active substance. The active substances have the ability as an antifungal. ACA can be solved in semipolar solvent, for example ethanol 70%. The aim of this study is to make cream with raw material of Galangal rhizome ( Alpinia galanga L .). The method of taking Galangal rhizome ( Alpinia galangal L .) extracts use maceration. The cream formulation use bases that can be washed by using water. The emulgator use stearic acid and triethanolamin. Glycerin is used for humectants. The each concentration of cream bases are formula 1 (stearic acid is 10%, triethanolamin is 2%, glycerin is 5% and vitamin E is 0.01%), formula 2 (stearic acid is 15%, triethanolamin 3%, glycerin 10%, and vitamin E is 0.05%), and formula 3 (stearic acid is 20%, triethanolamin is 4%, glycerin is 7.5%, and vitamin E is 0.09%). The concentration extracts of Galangal rhizome ( Alpinia galangal L .) is 10% each formula. Maceration process uses ethanol of 70%. A maceration process is to get Galangal rhizome ( Alpinia galangal L. ) extracts. The results are showed that formula 1, formula 2, and formula 3 has specific smell of Galangal rhizome, brown color, and thick consistency. Formula 1, formula 2, and formula 3 have cream homogenous. Formula 1 has optimal stability. Therefore, Galangal rhizome ( Alpinia Galanga L .) can be used as raw material for cream, and formula 1 has more stable than formula 2 and formula 3.
