Abstract

This paper studies the J-CTOD relationship for clamped SET specimens characterized by the plastic constraint factor m. Extensive finite element analyses (FEA), covering both plane-strain and three-dimensional clamped SET specimens made of homogeneous materials, are carried out to evaluate the m factors for estimating the CTOD based on the J-conversion method. A wide range of specimen configurations and material properties, including different crack sizes, specimen width, strain hardening exponent, and the ratio of elastic modulus to yield stress, is considered in the present FEA. Based on the results obtained from FEA, a new m factor is proposed and a set of fitting formulae for the plastic m factor is developed considering the effects of specimen configurations and material properties. The proposed m factors are validated through some experimental results on fracture resistance curve in reported literature and prove applicable in the estimation of the J-CTOD relationship for clamped SET specimens with reasonable accuracy.
