Abstract

The above-mentioned paper, by Kitching and Kannas, 1 discusses the stresses due to internal pressure for a radial branch in a pad reinforced spherical pressure vessel where the pad is not welded to the vessel at its outer circumference. The present Note discusses the stresses due to a radial load and moment applied to a radial branch in a spherical vessel with the same arrangement of pad reinforcement. Whereas, for pressure loading, the omission of the weld leads to lower stresses, it can lead to higher stresses in some cases for radial and moment loading.
