Abstract

Polypyrroles have been prepared containing large complex functionalized dopant anions that convey their functionality to the polymer; preparation conditions have been established for the production of bulk free-standing films. The redox properties of 1,1′-ferrocene-disulfonate-doped polypyrrole show stabilization of iron(II) in the polymer, while the absorption spectrum of tetrasulfonatophthalocyanine-doped polypyrroles are influenced by the presence of the dye; polypyrrole doped with tetrasulfonated dibenzo-18-crown-6 shows affinity for potassium ions in solution. In addition, similarities in polymer redox voltammetry for polymers containing all these dopants suggest the occurrence of a common redox process.
