Abstract

Six Υponomeuta species, four of which are closely related and all differing in their larval food plants, possess striking differences in their maxillary taste receptors. Three species feeding on rosaceous plants have sorbitol receptors. Sucrose stimulates all species and in some cases reactions to dulcitol were found. Specific receptors for sedoheptulose and malic acid are present in a species, of which the larva lives on Sedum. It is suggested that the chemical senses have a functional flexibility which is involved in the evolution of food preferences.
