Abstract

Several kinds of Zr 4+ sites are detected on the dehydroxylated surface of monoclinic zirconia by low-temperature CO adsorption. Some of the sites are blocked on the hydroxylated surface. These are Lewis sites with a moderate acidity which evidences that the strongest Lewis acid sites on zirconia do not participate in the strongest Zr 4+–O 2− acid–basic pairs.
