Abstract
In 2021, prompted by the claim of a colleague that the climate and species crises are ‘white man’s science’, two small, seed-funding research projects, explored contemporary cultural values and colonial barriers to people of colour engaging in Environmental Sciences. The project partners included organisations from diverse ethnicities, sectors, cultures and generations in specific locations across the UK. A form of deep listening (consciously focusing on people’s cultural narratives) was explored with creative storying (the making and telling of stories), as an approach to research. And from this a Brave Space emerged between the project participants; gaining the courage to face the challenges of deeply difficult and sensitive topics, such as race, power, privilege and oppression. Climate, species and cultural crises were perceived as the nexus of one crisis or emergency.
