Abstract

Our “What If” issue provides a perfect opportunity to consider foresight in its broadest context. Not only did the theme produce a crop of wellwritten and thoughtful articles but it also highlights the most critical element of strategic futures, the preparation for the “unprepared for.” Mapping out the limits of conventional wisdom and risk management is a challenge but an absolutely essential one. The inclusion of our first Science Fiction Symposium as part of the Orlando WorldFuture 2014 conference is one step that the World Future Society (WFS) has taken in that direction, which is the thoughtful incorporation of the imagination in foresight analysis. Another is the interweaving of cultural, economic, medical, scientific, and ethical considerations (to name but a few) into a more complete understanding of the trends and events which will shape all of our tomorrows. As many of you are already aware, I will be stepping down this summer as president of the WFS, following the Orlando conference. My successor, Dr. Amy Zalman, exceeds all of my expectations for an ideal CEO to guide WFS forward into what can only be called new territory. While I was on the cusp of the last generation of foresight writers and thinkers, she definitely represents the next generation, bringing fresh vision and new understandings to the task. Although I will be staying on as executive editor of World Future Review for a time, I am looking to Lane Jennings to continue his stellar performance as managing editor—he is responsible for all of the kind words and kudos we have received since the launch of this new publication. Please continue the extremely useful feedback you have provided as both readers and authors, and of course, as colleagues.
