Abstract

Psychiatric brain imaging has matured. We are now able to reliably localize and characterize brain function and structure associated with psychiatric disorders with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Functional MRI (fMRI) provides systems-level measures of brain activity, which allows for the direct correlation of brain states and mental states not provided by complementary techniques that give valuable cellular and molecular or temporal information. Psychiatric disorders are currently defined descriptively and categorically, however, based upon subjective reports and observations of behavior.
